Colonel Gillen was a member of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing. On February 18, 1970, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a strike mission against Route 7 over Eastern Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
