First Lieutenant Goery was awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

First Lieutenant Goery was a pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 312, Marine Air Group 12 aboard carrier USS BADOENG STRAIT (CVE-116). On December 27, 1952, while striking supplies on a dock near Chinnampo, North Korea, his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, so he headed to Taedong-Gang estuary and parachuted safely. However, attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
