Commander Gold was a member of Attack Squadron 85, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On December 22, 1965, he was the co-pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam when it crashed about 30 miles northeast of Haiphong. His remains were recovered on May 3, 1994 and identified on November 28, 1994. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
