Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class (Flight Mechanic) Griffin was the flight engineer of a PBM-5S Mariner patrol bomber with Patrol Bomber Squadron 42, based at the Naval Air Station Adak, Alaska. On July 2, 1953, while on routine patrol in heavy fog, his aircraft crashed near Adak, Aleutian Islands.
