First Lieutenant Hanson was the pilot of a F-86A Sabre Jet fighter interceptor with the 336th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On June 5, 1951, while on a combat mission and taking off from Airfield K-13 (Suwon), he jettisoned the aircraft's external fuel tanks and the plane crashed five miles from the runway.
