Captain Hardy was a member of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On March 14, 1972, he was the pilot of a North American Rockwell Bronco (OV10-A) on a forward air control mission over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. His aircraft was hit by hostile fire and he ejected safely, but contact with him was lost. His remains were recovered on September 20, 1983 and identified on October 28, 1983. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
