Major Harris was a member of the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On February 28, 1968, he was the co-pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105F) on a mission on the outskirts of Hanoi, North Vietnam. The aircraft was hit by a surface to air Missile and he ejected safely to the ground, but communication was lost shortly after landing. His remains were recovered on March 20, 1985 and identified on April 8, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
