Airman Third Class Hartley served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On December 20, 1952, he was a radio operator on a C-124 Globemaster transport departing Larson Air Force Base, Grant, Washington. The aircraft crashed on takeoff. Ninety personnel on board perished.
