Lieutenant Colonel Hartness was a member of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. On November 26, 1968, he was the pilot of a Cessna Skymaster Observation Aircraft (O-2A) on a visual reconnaissance about 28 miles northeast of Saravane, Laos. A missile struck the aircraft and it crashed. His remains were recovered on February 16, 2005 and identified on April 11, 2005. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
