Colonel Hauer was a member of the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 18, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a raid on Hanoi, North Vietnam, his aircraft was shot down at Vinh Yen. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on January 31, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
