Major Hayes was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Major Hayes was a passenger on a PBM-5 Mariner patrol bomber from Patrol Squadron 46 U.S. Navy. On January 11, 1951, his aircraft crashed at sea near Amani O'Shima, Japan and he drowned. His remains were not recovered.
