Lieutenant Heep was a member of Fighter Squadron 143, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On August 24, 1968, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
