Master Sergeant Heideman was a member of the 21st Special Operations Squadron. On October 24, 1970, he was the flight engineer of a Sikorsky Cargo Helicopter (CH-3C) on an extraction mission over Laos. After loading its passengers, the helicopter overturned on takeoff, killing him. His remains were recovered on June 14, 1995 and identified on April 6, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
