For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Helman was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Private First Class Helman was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in North Korea on November 30, 1950 and moved to a prison camp in North Korea where he died of malnutrition and pneumonia on January 19, 1951. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
