Staff Sergeant Hicks was a rifleman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On March 25, 1969, he was on a road interdiction mission and was wounded several times. He was being evacuated when his unit was overrun. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
