First Lieutenant Hoelzel was a pilot of a AD-2 Skyraider fighter the Marine Attack Squadron 121, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On December 1, 1951 while making a bomb run, he lost contact and was declared Missing in Action. He was presumed dead on December 15, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
