Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Howes was a member of the 71st Aviation Company, 14 Aviation Battalion, 16 Aviation Group, 23 Infantry Division (Americal). On January 10, 1970, he was the co-pilot of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) making a flight from Tien Phuoc to Chu Lai, South Vietnam. Contact with the aircraft was lost and he was listed as Missing in Action. His remains were recovered in 1994 and identified on May 17, 2010. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
