Chief Warrant Officer, Second Class Hummel was a member of Troop B, 7th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 6, 1971, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) returning from a combat support mission in Laos. The last contact with the aircraft was by Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
