Private First Class Hunter was a rifleman with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On October 29, 1968, he was swimming in the ocean with an air mattress in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam, when a wave swept him off the mattress and he drowned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
