Lieutenant Colonel Irwin was a member of the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On February 17, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission 15 miles west of Vinh, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on July 31, 1989 and identified on November 3, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
