For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Johnson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Gold Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Lieutenant Johnson was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 114 (884) aboard aircraft carrier USS KEARSARGE (CVA-33). On October 4, 1952, while diving at supply areas near Yongpo, North Korea, he was attacked by four MiG-15's near Wonsan, North Korea. He was shot down and crashed into the water close to the beach. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
