Sergeant Major Jones was a member of Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group. On October 3, 1966, he was a member of a patrol that had been inserted into Laos near the border or South Vietnam just west of the Demilitarized Zone, when they came under intense enemy fire. He was listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
