Major Karins was a member of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 11, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phu Province, North Vietnam. As the aircraft neared the target it was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on April 6, 1988 and identified on July 18, 1988. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
