Colonel Knapp was a member of 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On April 24, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a strike mission on a five span bridge 4 miles north of the middle of Hanoi, North Vietnam. During the strike his aircraft was hit by flak, disintegrated and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
