Senior Master Sergeant Knebel was a member of the 374th Field Maintenance Squadron. On May 22, 1968, he was a passenger on a Lockheed Hercules Transport Aircraft (C-130A) on a mission near Muong Nong, Savannakhet Province, Laos. Radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on May 9, 2002 and identified on March 13, 2009. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
