Warrant Officer, First Class Konyu was a member of Company B, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. On April 16, 1969, he was the pilot of a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) making a landing on a combat mission 10 miles from the border of Laos in northern Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam when his aircraft receive enemy fire crashed and burned killing him. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
