Major Koonce was a member of the 606th Air Commando Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Airfield, Thailand. On December 25, 1967, he was the pilot of a North American Nomad Trainer (T-28D) on a mission near Ban Karai Pass, Khammouane Province, Laos. His aircraft was at Ban Som Peng, when it was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
