Major Kuhlman was a member of the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 242, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On January 17, 1969, he was the bombardier/navigator of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat support mission near the A Shau Valley, South Vietnam, when contact with his aircraft was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
