Major Kuhlmann was a member of the 602nd Special Operations Squadron, Nakhom Phenom, Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. On September 22, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) on a mission 40 miles southwest of Sam Neua, Xiangkhoang Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on February 10, 1995 and identified on September 1, 1995. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
