Private First Class Kuykendall was a gunner with the 2nd Platoon, Troop F, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). On August 18, 1971, he was trying to recover a tracked vehicle that had stalled while crossing the Thu Bon River in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He tried to swim to the vehicle carrying a cable, but the rapid current carried him away. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
