Captain Ladewig was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Air Base, Thailand. On August 24, 1968, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on an armed reconnaissance 10 miles southwest of Quang Khe, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam. After a bombing run his aircraft crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
