Captain Lane was a member of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On August 23, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a strike mission about 25 miles southwest of Hanoi, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and disintegrated. He parachuted to the ground but contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
