Captain LeFever was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On November 5, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) as forward air controller for a mission just southwest of Ban Som Peng, Khammouane Province, Laos. The aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed in a ball of flames. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
