Private First Class Lewis was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. In Korea, he was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was part of the offensive that drove the enemy across the 38th parallel. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on June 3, 1951 and died of those wounds the following day.
