Lieutenant Colonel Lopez was a member of Command and Control, 5th Special Forces Group. On March 6, 1968, he was a passenger in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) on an insertion mission in South Vietnam. While hovering over the jungle canopy his aircraft received heavy fire, crashed and burned. His remains were recovered on October 7, 1994 and identified on June 9, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
