First Lieutenant Lum was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand. On December 29, 1966, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission over the South China Sea, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
