Colonel Lunsford was a member of the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Danang Air Base, South Vietnam. On July 25, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4C) on a mission along the coast of North Vietnam about 10 miles south of Dong Hoi, Quang Binh Province, where his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
