Colonel MacCann was a member of the 428th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On March 28, 1968, he was the pilot of a General Dynamics Aardvark Fighter (F-111A) on a night mission near Phu Xa Airfield about 5 miles northwest of Dong Hoi, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
