Colonel Macko was a member of the 8th Tactical Bomber Squadron. On February 22, 1969, he was the co-pilot of a Martin Canberra Bomber (B-57B) on a bombing mission over Savannakhet Province, Laos, when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on November 6, 1996 and identified on August 15, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
