First Lieutenant Magers was a member of 158th Aviation Battalion, 160th Aviation Group, 101st Airborne Division. On June 1, 1971, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) on a combat mission in northwest Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed killing him. His remains were recovered on July 29, 2008 and identified on March 22, 2010. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
