Major Magnusson was a member of the 355th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 4, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a protection mission for the bombing of the Thanh Hoa Railroad and Highway Bridge across the Song Ma River 3 miles north of Thanh Hoa, Annan Province, North Vietnam. His aircraft was hit by MiG-17 and flew out to the Gulf of Tonkin near Hon Me Island and ditched. He could not be found. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
