Staff Sergeant Mangan was a veteran of World War II, completing 35 missions over Germany as a tail gunner. In Korea, he was the crew chief of a F-86E Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 335th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On October 27, 1951, he died in a hospital in Japan, while on rest and recuperation leave.
