Captain Mascari was a member of the 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron. On May 2, 1969, he was the pilot of a Cessna Skymaster Observation Aircraft (O-2A) on a mission 15 miles southeast of Muong Nong, on the border of Savannakhet and Saravane Provinces in Laos, where it was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
