Specialist, Fifth Class Mason was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On October 17, 1968, he was a passenger in a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) being carried from the Naval destroyer USS EVERSOLE (DD-789) off the coast of South Vietnam to his unit. The aircraft crashed into the sea about 500 meters from the USS EVERSOLE. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
