Colonel Mason was a member of the 41st Tactical Airlift Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base. On May 22, 1968, he was the pilot of a Lockheed Hercules Transport Aircraft (C-130A) on a mission near Muong Nong, Savannakhet Province, Laos. Radio contact was lost. His remains were recovered on May 29, 2002 and identified on March 13, 2009. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
