Captain McCarty was a member of the 25th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On June 24, 1972, he was flying in a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) when he encountered six MiGs over Nghia Lo Province, North Vietnam and his aircraft was shot down by an air to air missile. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on June 11, 1997. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
