Major McCubbin was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On May 19, 1968, he was the co-pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a night armed reconnaissance over Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on January 24, 1989 and identified on June 12, 2006. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
