Lieutenant Colonel McDonald was a member of the 336th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On December 31, 1964, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) over A Shau Valley, South Vietnam. The weather became bad and he was listed as missing. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
