Lieutenant Colonel McElroy was a member of Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On March 16, 1966, he was the pilot of a Grumman Mohawk Aircraft (OV-1A) on a photographic reconnaissance along Route 91 on the west side of the Se Nam Kok River northwest of Tchepone, Laos. His aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. His remains were recovered and identified on February 5, 2010. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
