Hospital Corpsman McGrath was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. On August 3, 1967, he was a passenger a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) being extracted from a firefight in A Shau Valley, South Vietnam when the helicopter was hit by a bazooka and crashed. His remains were recovered on June 8, 1994 and identified on July 10, 2001. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
